Day One of Ibiza JoySail 2026 was a shoreside affair as building storm clouds in the area put pause to the start.
With weather conditions closely reviewed, and the safety of the fleet prioritised, the decision was taken by Ibiza JoySail organisers to keep the fleet on the dock. An orange alert was issued by the Balearic Government to those in Ibiza and Formentera, hearlding the arrival of a powerful front accompanied by storms and strong winds.
Crews enjoyed the chance to catch up and talk tactics for the week in the event tent.
“Unfortunately, we have to take the weather as it comes and safety is the priority. Getting a fleet of 20 boats out of the harbour, and then returned safely if conditions worsen, just can’t be guaranteed so we don’t take the risk. The 19-strong fleet, ranging from 80 to 147 feet, will hopefully set sail tomorrow with racing scheduled to start at 12:00. This is pending further developments in the weather, as storms are expected early morning – the Race Committee and Organisers are monitoring the situation closely.
