Formentera’s dramatic coastline is backdrop to Day Two at Ibiza JoySail

Share

Thursday 19 September, Ibiza, Spain : A brisk easterly wind greeted the 22-strong fleet on the second day of racing at Ibiza JoySail. With a scheduled race around the island of Formentera, the fleet left the dock mid-morning to ensure reaching the start line some 13nm from the ‘home’ of the regatta in Marina Ibiza.

Day two proved to be a beautiful day on the water, with the crews enjoying the type of sailing that has become the hallmark of Ibiza JoySail. Following the staggered start procedure at the start line just off the Playa de Tramuntana, the fleet headed upwind to Punta de Sa Creu before hoisting spinnakers and passing the spectacular cliffs heading to the Faro de la Mola.

Faro de la Mola is famous for being Formentera’s first lighthouse, first inaugurated in 1861, as well as the setting for The Adventures of Hector Servadac by Jules Verne.Once past the La Mola the fleet the stretched out, with some of them opting to go into the bay at Playa de Mijorn to find more wind, despite the tactical manoeuvring the fleet bunched back up through the gate at Cabo de la Barberia, before the final upwind leg of the 19nm and the finish at Punta de Gavina.

The two Swan 115’s, Moat and Jasi continue their tight competition in the Performance class with Moat again just edging ahead to beat Jasi.

In the Performance Cruising XL class, the brand-new Swan 88 Spiip, continues to lead the overall, despite finishing second to the Spirit Yachts 111 Geist. While in Performance Cruising L, Liberty Squared continue to lead the overall with Corinthian entry Kiboko 4 in second place.

At the smaller end of the fleet the competitive Café Racers Open Season and Ganesha continue to battle at the top of the class with Open Season once again leading the class. In the World Cruising, Aurelius and Nostromo continue to battle for the top spot, with the Dykstra 100 narrowly beating the Dubois 100 to tie in first place.Racing is due to start at midday (local time) tomorrow, Saturday, with the final racecourse confirmed by the Race Committee first thing in the morning.

This evening sees the 400 plus crews and guests gather at Roto Restaurant in Marina Ibiza for the official owner’s dinner.
